What you're feeling

Is stroke recovery starting to shape what you'll do and what you skip?

Strokes, ischemic or hemorrhagic, interrupt blood flow to part of the brain, killing neurons in the immediate area and stunning the ones around it. Recovery comes from the brain reorganizing itself, and that takes practice that's repeated, task-specific, and at the right intensity. Insurance-funded protocols rarely supply enough of any of those three.

What we usually hear
  • A.Hemiparesis: weakness on one side of the body
  • B.Difficulty with balance, gait, or single-leg stance
  • C.Coordination challenges with fine and gross motor tasks
  • D.Speech, cognitive, or visual changes
  • E.Fatigue with sustained physical or cognitive load
  • F.A sense that 'this is as good as it gets', when it isn't

How we work

Our approach to stroke recovery.

Activity-based training that progressively challenges the affected side: weight-bearing, gait-specific work, dual-task training, repetitive practice, and graded resistance work. Sessions are 1-on-1 with an Advanced Specialist, built around where your body is today, not a generic protocol. We coordinate with your neurologist, OT, or speech therapist when it helps.

I had a stroke in 2022 and was told to manage expectations. Nobody at ADAPT manages expectations. They raise them. I'm walking, lifting, and back to gardening. The Advanced team is something special.

I always feel so much better after going to ADAPT. Even after I've been away awhile, Jessica made me feel so welcome, seen, and missed. She cares for her clients. You will feel a difference after a class there. You are never too old to join.

I came in after a knee replacement convinced I'd never hike again. Two years later I'm in the mountains every weekend, and back in the gym three mornings a week. ADAPT didn't fix me. They taught me how to keep getting better.

Why ADAPT

Five reasons members come, and stay for a decade.

Parallel-bar gait training in the ADAPT Advanced area
01

One system, not a handoff.

Your PT and your coach aren't running separate playbooks. They read the same intake and apply the same movement principles, so restoring better movement in the clinic and reinforcing it in training is one continuous plan, not a baton pass.

02

Direct access in Oregon: no referral required.

Skip the doctor's-office stop-over. Walk in, get assessed, start moving better. PT is cash-pay: only motor-vehicle-accident (PIP) insurance is billed.

03

Same practitioner every visit.

Continuity that compounds. Each session builds on the last because the same eyes track how your movement is changing, and consistency is what actually changes the body.

04

Long-arc, not quick-fix.

A few weeks of relief is fine. Decades of capability is the goal. Getting older doesn't mean giving things up. Members come in for one problem and stay for years because the system keeps progressing with them.

05

We read movement, not just imaging.

Imaging describes the structure. The movement assessment shows where your body is compensating and loading the wrong tissue. We work with what your body actually does, then restore it doing the right job.

What to expect

Get your week back from stroke recovery.

The first 6–12 months post-stroke have the steepest recovery curve, but meaningful gains continue for years with consistent training. Most members train 1–3x weekly across multi-year arcs.

Why the system works
  • Comprehensive assessment. Postural pictures, full movement screen, and a baseline you can measure progress against. Numbers, not vibes.
  • A plan built for your body.Shaped around your goals, your imaging, and what your body actually does, not what it's supposed to do.
  • Same practitioner, every visit. Continuity that compounds. The plan adjusts as your movement changes.
  • Reinforced until it sticks. As the pain quiets, the same system carries into classes and small-group training so the gains don't slide back.
